Why a checklist helps

Digital receipt systems look similar in a demo. The differences show up afterwards: in what you have to change, what you keep paying and what happens when something goes wrong. These seven questions are worth asking of any vendor, including us.

1. Do I have to replace or change my POS?

A system that asks you to rip out your POS carries real cost and disruption. Ask whether it sits alongside what you already use. With loopd, a small device connects to the same network as your POS, and nothing is installed on the POS itself. Your staff need no retraining.

2. Do my customers need an app or an account?

Every extra step costs you customers at the counter. With loopd, customers tap their phone and a standard web page opens. There is no app and no account.

3. Who sets it up, and how long does it take?

Ask who does the work and how many visits it takes. With loopd, we visit your shop for a consultation, connect to your network, collect sample transactions, build your receipt format from them and return to go live. Setup is usually completed within a week of the first visit.

4. What exactly will it cost?

Look for three things: whether the price is flat or charged per transaction, whether there is a minimum contract, and whether the hardware is included. Our launch price is $45 per month per location, with the device included, a 3-month minimum and no per-transaction fees. Standard pricing is $66 per month, and early merchants keep the launch rate for life. Add-on modules beyond the core platform are quoted separately, and we confirm pricing with you before anything is added. If you cancel, the device is yours to keep, though the dashboard and receipt service stop.

5. Who owns my data, and can I take it with me?

Ask where customer data is stored, who can see it and whether you can export it. With loopd, customer data is stored securely and never sold or shared with third parties, each merchant only sees data from their own customers, and you can export your customer list to CSV.

6. Does the receipt carry what my business needs?

Ask for a sample receipt. If you are GST-registered, check it with your accountant against what your receipts must show. If your sector needs extra details, such as prescriptions in optometry, ask whether the template can be customised. loopd builds a custom receipt template for each business, with industry-specific fields on request.

7. What happens when something goes wrong?

Ask what happens if your internet goes down and how quickly the vendor answers. With loopd, your POS and operations continue as normal because loopd never becomes a dependency, and we aim to reply to every message the same day during business hours.

Using the list

Put these questions to every vendor you speak to and write the answers down side by side. The differences between the answers will tell you more than any feature list.
