Why loyalty apps stall at small shops

A loyalty app asks the customer to do three things before they get anything back: download it, create an account and remember to open it. For someone buying a coffee on the way to work, that is too much effort for a small reward.

Paper stamp cards avoid the app, but they get lost, left at home or never picked up, and they tell the owner nothing about who is coming back.

What a counter-based programme looks like

The simplest version works through the receipt itself. When a customer taps for their digital receipt, points are added to their record. Their balance shows on their receipt page, so there is no card to carry and nothing to install.

Behind the counter, staff can award, deduct and redeem points from the dashboard, every redemption is logged, and a balance guard stops points going negative.

Four decisions to make before you start

  • What earns points — points per visit are simplest when most items cost about the same. Points per dollar suit shops where baskets vary a lot.
  • What the reward is — choose something that costs you less than it feels worth to the customer, such as a drink or a small add-on, rather than a large discount.
  • How far away the first reward is — a reward reachable within a handful of visits keeps people coming back. A distant one gets forgotten.
  • How you tell people — one sentence at the counter does more than a poster. Make it part of what staff say as the customer taps.

Reading the results

After a few weeks, your customer list answers questions you could not answer before: who your regulars are, how often they come, and who has not been back in a while. Start with two simple checks each month: your most frequent visitors, and the regulars who have gone quiet. We walk through these in five customer data checks.

Keep customer data respectful. Use only what customers have given you, tell them what you collect, and check the PDPC’s guidance on personal data if you are unsure.

Common mistakes

  • A scheme too complicated to explain in one sentence.
  • A first reward set so far away that nobody expects to reach it.
  • Staff who forget to mention it.
  • Collecting the data and never looking at it.

Common questions

Do customers have to give their phone number?
To earn points, customers enter their phone number on their receipt page. A customer who prefers not to can simply skip it and still keep their receipt.

What if a mistake is made at the counter?
Staff can award, deduct and redeem points from the dashboard, and every redemption is logged, so any correction leaves a clear record.

Is the loyalty programme an extra cost?
No. The loyalty programme is part of the core platform and is included in all plans, so there is nothing extra to buy.
